31st Annual Convention of the German 300SL Club
May 13 – 16, 2010
Dresden / Germany

May in Germany can be sunny and warm, as we have experienced at prior conventions. This year it seemed like the typical April weather continued into May: it was rather cold and rainy.

Dresden is called again “Elb-Florenz” (which means: it has the flair of Italy’s Florence on the Elbe River). After Dresden was totally destroyed at the end of WWII reconstruction was very slow during the Russian occupation thereafter. Only after the German reunification in 1989 did the real effort begin to restore the city to its former glory. Today Dresden with its many castles along the Elbe River, is a major tourist attraction, being one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.

SLR roadster and ivory Gullwing front grand Trachtenbergpalais Kempinski Hotel located in the heart of Dresden.

The convention was well attended: 216 member brought eighty-three 300SL’s to the luxurious Trachtenbergpalais Kempinski Hotel located in the heart of Dresden, next to the famous Zwinger, the Semper Opera and the Frauenkirche.

Thursday May 13
Arriving members met at the vast Mercedes factory store, an impressive facility even by Mercedes standards. After check-in at the hotel, the convention kicked off with a dinner cruise on the Elbe River onboard the MS “August der Starke”, along numerous castles and villas lining the shores.

Grey, wet weather greets the group.

Friday May 14
The day of the rally was leading us to the Bastei in the Saechsische Schweiz (the Sandstone Mountains in the so-called Switzerland of Saxony) high above the Elbe River. Despite the rain and fog nobody missed the guided tour of this famous area with its stunning rock formations.

Breathtaking view high above the fog shrouded Elbe river.

After a buffet lunch at the Bastei Hotel the rally continued through the beautiful countryside, with a stop at a member’s industrial bakery, where a five foot round “Mercedes” cake was waiting for us. Back to the hotel to get ready for the bus transfer to the beautifully restored Albrechtsberg Castle, for an evening of entertainment, followed by a delicious dinner in the royal ballroom of the castle.

Saturday May 15
The morning offered a guided walking tour through the inner city, followed by the opportunity to attend an organ concert at the beautifully restored Frauenkirche.

A few of the 83 300SLs lined up at a small airfield awaiting a stunt plane demonstration.

At 1 PM a long convoy of SL’s found its way to the nearby Aviation Museum in Grossenhain, for a great buffet lunch. The afternoon was free to take sightseeing flights in historic open double-deckers. The rain stopped just in time to enjoy a flight show by a daredevil stunt pilot. The evening was reserved for the gala dinner at the hotel.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4869" title="DSC09300" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/DSC09300.JPG" alt="A serious performer closed up against the elements: $1m Stirling Moss Edition SLR rests in the courtyard of the Trachtenbergpalais Kempinski Hotel. What a glorious piece of automotive sculpture!

Sunday May 16
After a farewell breakfast the skies cleared up, which was a welcome site for the members and their cars on the long drive home. We headed for Nuremberg on the Autobahn, where the rented S Class Diesel felt at home, effortless reaching 150mph, traffic permitting.

Gullwings and Roadsters touring Germany.

We do not understand why Mercedes does not make this wonderful model available in the US. The torque and economy of the diesel engine combined with the comfort of the S Class is an unbeatable combination. Yes, there is the S400 Hybrid, but the premium you pay for a diesel vehicle is paid back by lower fuel cost in a shorter time than required for hybrid vehicles.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4871" title="DSC09335" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/DSC09335.JPG" alt="When was the last time you saw a non-metallic green 300SL of any type? The bumperless red GW looks like its spent some time on the track - note the yellow tow loop next to the number plate.

Our thanks to the organizers for another great convention, which despite the weather could not dampen the spirit of this wonderful group of people. We are looking forward to next year’s convention to be held May 26-29, 2011 in the historic city of Wuerzburg/Germany.

Surviving the rigors of the Track

While 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters are nitpicked today for minute variations in originality by concours judges and discriminating buyers, this was certainly not the case in the late ’50s and early ’60s. This era saw the cars fall to their lowest values in the 55 year history of the series and repairs were often made with an eye toward expediency rather than maintaining an original configuration, particularly in the racing arena.

Many 300SLs were raced vigorously across the country by their owners and when calamity struck whether of a mechanical nature or resulting in folded coachwork, repairs were made that would make today’s 300SL crowd gasp. Crude repairs were often made to quickly get the car back on the grid for the next event.

Gullwing "Speedster" a result of damaged roof/doors having been sawed off! Vaca Valley, CA circa 1962.

If you happened to roll your Gullwing at one of northern California’s bleak road courses such and Vaca Valley or Cotati, one solution to quickly return to competition would be to simply saw the deformed roof and gullwing doors off. You’d end up with a 300SL speedster and be back to the track the next weekend, although likely re-classified as a “Modified” and now competing with the odd Ferrari Testa Rossa or Maserati 300S.

The Chuck Porter Special

Hollywood body shop owner, Chuck Porter, put together perhaps the most sacrificial 300SL by re-constructing a wrecked Gullwing into a bastardized road racing special. The car had been comprehensively destroyed somewhere between Los Angeles and Palm Springs during delivery to its new owner and was sitting in a Los Angeles salvage yard when Porter found it. Purchased in 1955 for $500 the twisted hulk would emerge after Porter’s handiwork as a competent road racing special initially still fitted with its original engine. The car was raced throughout California from 1955-1959 with a variety of engines, the most potent of which was a Hilborn fuel injected Corvette unit.

Chuck Porter Mercedes 300SLS Chevy special at this time owned by Peter Culkin

Fuel injected Corvette engine in Chuck Porter 300SLS(scrap) special.

Peter Culkin Gullwing

Other modified cars followed as crunched SLs were cobbled back together to continue their racing exploits. Perhaps one of the most raced and least damaged Gullwings would have to be the Peter Culkin car. Raced extensively throughout California with great success, this Gullwing sits in California today in largely “as-raced” condition awaiting a sympathetic restoration.

Peter Culkin's much raced and rarely damaged Gullwing.

Mercedes-Benz joins Cadillac as Featured Marque

The 44th edition of the Palo Alto Concours offered Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts an opportunity to immerse themselves in displays covering six decades of the Silver Star’s products. Thanks to the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s San Francisco region, we were blessed with a fabulous and highly educational group of Mercedes.

We mustn’t take these concours displays for granted. Palo Alto’s massive Mercedes display – over 40 cars – was largely do to the efforts of MBCA’s SF Bay region president Robert Schilling, MBCA director at large Laura Simonds, and former MBCA president and Star Magazine publisher, Richard Simonds. We present a photo essay below of many of great cars this trio pulled together.

It performed flawlessly. Next, the 300 SL was driven in the Florida 1000 classic rally, running through Northern Florida and Southern Georgia, again performing as it should and accumulating another 1,750 miles. Estimate: $500k-$575k

Mr. Burden was the patriarch of an established and very wealthy East Coast family with the grandest homes in New York City and relationships to other established families, the Vanderbilts included. In a letter written in 1969 by Burden to the car’s second owner, Herbert Jaffe of Woodbury, New York, Burden relates that he “drove it abroad for several summers, then brought it to the United States.” He goes on to describe the other Mercedes-Benz models he had owned before buying the 540K, including a Model K, Model S, SS, SSK, and 770! Even more interesting is Burden’s explanation of the car’s striking styling. His intention was to “produce something that would give an effect similar to the racing Mercedes of that period,” but as one can see from the car, the results were somewhat different. Nonetheless, the Mercedes-Benz is truly remarkable. With its skirted rear fenders and fully disappearing top, it is very sleek looking, while the car’s unique and graceful radiator shell and twin rear spares give the body a French-influenced European flair. The prior owner acquired the car from Roy Jaffe in 2005 before it joined a large private collection in 2007. Today, it continues to benefit from the comprehensive professional restoration that was commissioned by Mr. Jaffe and completed by LaVine Restorations of Nappanee, Indiana.
The Mille Miglia
Recreating the Magic

Last run in May 1957, the Mille Miglia was a tortuous open road race conducted over roughly 1000 miles of Italy’s generally poor roads from Brescia to Rome and back. Drivers and co-drivers braved often appalling conditions, fatigue and mechanical failure for the chance of surviving an event often marred with horrific accidents. A tragic accident during the 24th and final running in 1957 claimed the lives of the highly talented Spanish gentleman driver Alfonse de Portago and co-driver American Edmund Nelson as well as ten spectators, ending the event’s professional status.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4142" title="2" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/23.jpg" alt="The winner of the last Mille Miglia: The silver haired Piero Taruffi's 1957 Ferrari 315S.
Mercedes and the 2010 “Storica”
The Cars and the Stars

The Mille Miglia retrospective or “Storica” is the premier event within the glamorous world of vintage road races. Whether you focus on the Mille Miglias of the ’20s, ’30s or the ’50s, the Silver Star has always featured prominently in the results. Epochal wins by Rudolf Caracciola in 1931 aboard an SSK and (Sir) Stirling Moss piloting the all conquering 300SLR in 1955 firmly embedded this event in Mercedes’ DNA. We should note Alfa Romeo as the most prolific winner of the original event with no less than 11 wins.

Mercedes-Benz was well represented in this year’s event with a variety of cars ranging from two SSKs to myriad Gullwings – including 2011 editions, a 111 coupe and at least a few trusty – and cozy – ponton sedans. Sir Stirling’s 1955 win was honored by the presence of at least one SLR Stirling Moss Edition.

Strong Mercedes Presence
Celebrating the “King”

Now in its 15th year, Florida’s Amelia Island Concours has established itself as a world class show with innovative displays, exciting featured marques and unique personalities.

This year’s event celebrated “The King” – no, not THAT king but the king of stock car racing, Richard Petty. Event organizer Bill Warner assembled a large group of Petty’s race cars and orchestrated a few appearances by the man with 200 NASCAR victories.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4074" title="3" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/32.jpg" alt="A circle of Petty blue. This diverse selection of the King's thundering stock cars graced the lawn at Amelia.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4078" title="7" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/71.jpg" alt=" One of the most audacious factory stock cars, Plymouth's "Superbird" (and Dodge's "Daytona") steamrolled the competition in the early '70s.
Prewar Presence

Because of their rarity and lack of exposure at all but the most prestigious concours, prewar Mercedes can be under appreciated by many Mercedes enthusiasts (including this author). Closer study of the cars from an aesthetic and technical viewpoint can be revealing. Let’s look at the prewar Mercedes-Benz on display for a quick education on series type and coachwork variations.

Gullwings

Complementing the prewar Mercedes, the Gullwings on hand in Florida represented three distinct categories of the winged coupes: an early W194 competition car, a standard steel example and one of the 29 alloy cars.

Mark your calendars for 2011. Amelia Island will undoubtedly present another fabulous show and tour March 11-13, 2011.

Techo Classica Essen 2010
Extraordinary German Classic Car Show

Established in 1967, the annual Essen Motor Show combines all aspects of the European classic car scene; sellers, buyers, enthusiasts and automobile manufacturers with a keen sense of their history.

This year’s show featured large exhibits from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi – each a manufacturer with a storied racing history and a consistent thread of producing interesting sports and touring cars. That thread of unique motorcars is particularly long at Mercedes-Benz and the Silver Star’s presence at the show was significant.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3759" title="922437" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/922437.jpg" alt="Massive Mercedes Classic display featured a mouthwatering display of the Silver Star's glorious past.
We present many of the glorious Mercedes-Benz’ at the show below, both from Mercedes Classic and private vendors. Via each image’s caption, we provide educational information for those who may not be familiar with some of these iconic automobiles. Enjoy the show.

Worldwide Auctioneers offers Black 5-speed

Photography from Worldwide Auctioneers and MercedesHeritage.com

As part of their May 1st Houston Classic Auction, Worldwide Auctioneers is offering an extremely low mileage example of the obscure Ostermeier Gullwing re-creations. Perhaps the most respected re-creation of the original 1954 Gullwing, Ostermeiers rarely come up for sale and values are somewhat difficult to ascertain.

Early 'Ostermeier" Gullwing certainly looks the part. 177 hp mid '70s 2.8 liter six lies under the hood. This is the 34th of about 250 Ostermeiers constructed.

With only about 250 constructed (contrary to Worldwide’s assertion of 50 constructed) by aeronautical engineer Anton Ostermeier, these unique cars are quite rare and (comparatively) inexpensive to own. This 1989 car – the 34th example constructed – offered in Houston is quite desirable being fitted with a 5-spd gearbox, finished in black and showing only 1,067 miles on the clock.

Wide wheels/tires and slightly bulbous tail the only tips to a replica. Mercedes-Benz was not pleased with Ostermeier's project.

What is it worth? The auction estimate notes a selling range of $160k-$180k. We sold our silver/red automatic #1083 in December 2009 for $140k, a $25k loss from our April 2008 purchase price. A sale this month off MercedesHeritage.com of a 1991 manual gearbox Ostermeier for about $160k confirms that there is a market for these beautifully constructed cars.

This 1991 Ostermeier just sold off MercedesHeritage.com for about $160k. Later cars such as this had E-class engines.

Worldwide’s car is fitted with the less desirable – but more photogenic – M110 twin cam engine dating from the mid ’70s. It is also a very early car lacking subsequent revisions learned during the production process. Our car and the recent website sale both were fitted with 12 valve E-class engines from the late ’90s.

We’ll report on this sale next month. With only 1k miles, the right color and a manual gearbox, this car could bring $150k+. This looks to be quite a value compared to the $525k generated by the high caliber ’street condition’ correct 1955 Gullwing we sold in December. We’ll see just how it fares on May 2.

Among the automobiles of the world, few stir the passion of enthusiasts more than lean high-performance racing and road cars. With power to spare and aggressive good looks, the high performance ’super’ sports car has fascinated us since the dawn of the automobile.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3688" title="uhl coupe side" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/uhl-coupe-side.jpg" alt="1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR 'Uhlenhaut' coupe epitomizes Mercedes-Benz' road/racing synergy.
Most volume manufacturers have produced super sports cars at some time in their history with varying levels of commitment. Automobile racing, the supreme test of a manufacturer’s technical prowess and financial commitment, serves as a periodic marketing program for many car companies. Few remain eternally committed to both high performance automobile production and auto racing.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3689" title="c111" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/c111.jpg" alt="C111 project focused on Wankel engine development.
Super Sports Car Fascination in Stuttgart

Few with the exception of Mercedes-Benz. The Silver Star has constructed high performance products since the turn of the last century and competed with few interruptions in auto racing events for over a century. We can’t forget Mercedes triumphed at Indianapolis in 1915 AND 1994*.

With its current spectacular high performance road cars and world beating competition cars, Mercedes-Benz continues this long tradition today. Beginning April 27, the factory’s stylish Museum in Stuttgart will present a glorious display of eight influential ‘Super Sports’ cars.

Our friends from Hahn and Woodward Auto Restoration are well into a body-off Gullwing restoration. Upgrading the interior is part of the process and safe seat belt installation is essential. Have a look at their process.

What’s the best method to install?

Photos from Hahn and Woodward Auto Restoration

Safety considerations when mounting 300SL Gullwing or Roadster seat belts

As we’ve mentioned in previous articles, the 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters were born out of a racing heritage. Their tubular frames and alloy components make for a nimble, light weight machine. We’ve already discussed ways to mitigate the heat transferred by the aluminum floorpan, but there is another important consideration that must be made related to the floorpans…..the Seat belt Mountings.

We have seen several cars come into the shop with the seatbelts mounted through the aluminum floorpan and secured with a flat washer and a nut. This arrangement is dangerous as it is unlikely to hold together in an accident. There is a significant chance the bolt will tear through the floorpan…and the result will not be pleasant for the individual in that seat.

This floor-pan photo illustrates how thin the aluminum is. Considering it is over 50 years old and has been subjected to the stress of regular road use, seat belts mounted to the pan alone could easily fail in a moderate accident.

In a 30 mph crash, a 160 Lb. driver will strain the seatbelt mounting with a force of 2.4 tons. It is easy to see why the floorpan may not be up to task. Obviously, higher speeds or greater occupant weight will increase the amount of force.

During our restorations, we always take the extra step to address the seat belt mounting points. There are several options for doing this. These include welding a steel mounting plate to the tubular frame or adding an aluminum plate to the bottom of the floorpan to increase the mounting surface area then securing a piece of aircraft cable to the bolt. The aircraft cable is then anchored to the frame. In the event the floorpan gives way, the cable will anchor the seat belt.

Here is a typical anchor cable that can be used to secure the seat belt mounting hardware to the tubular frame of your 300SL Gullwing or Roadster.

In all cases we utilize grade 8 hardware for strength and durability. We also strongly recommend nyloc nuts for added security. Another important consideration is having the seat belts themselves re-webbed. There are several companies that specialize in seat belt restoration and the end result is well worth the price. Your car will look great and you will enjoy piece of mind knowing you’ve taken steps to make the vehicle as safe as possible should the worst happen.

Talk with your restoration shop about these options as well as other ways you can make the ride of your dreams safe for you and your loved ones. If you have any questions about the enhancements we’ve suggested, please feel free to contact us at info@hahnandwoodward.com
