With 500hp fairly commonplace today in the Mercedes-Benz model lineup, it was a novelty in 2002. Have a look at the result of AMG breathing on the 2000/2001 SL600.

SL73 is quite a sleeper with only discrete badging and exhaust tips betraying massive power.

Mercedes-Benz AMG SL73
The not-so-subtle inspiration for the SL65

If the 302 hp 2000 SL500 is not up to your power requirements, perhaps 525 hp would better suit your needs. AMG, never known to be shy regarding shoehorning massive power into various Mercedes products, figured the only way to liven up the 4500 lb 1999-2001 SL600 was to add power, and plenty of it.

While the standard specification SL600 generated a seamless 389hp from its 5.9 liter 48 valve V-12, an additional 1.4 liters of displacement was required to obtain the 34% hp increase necessary to drag this heavyweight to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. And the maximum torque ballooned from 420 ft/lb to 558 ft/lb! Other modifications included suitably updated brakes and suspension as well as subtle cosmetic refinements that made this European spec only hot rod quite a sleeper.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1753" title="21" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/21.jpg" alt="7.3 liter monster delivers 525hp and 553ft/lbs torque. Standard 6 liter V-12 delivered 389hp in US spec.

Clarkson weighs in

Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson, during a road test in 2001, moaned about the car’s dated looks, generally imprecise handling, and brakes that did not inspire confidence. And this was for a car that sold for an enormous premium above the already stratospherically priced standard Euro SL600. He was, however, pleased with the massive smoky burnouts possible once the traction aids were switched off.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1754" title="41" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/41.jpg" alt="Opulent interior largely unchanged from standard spec V-12 SL600.
With only 85 constructed, chances are you’ll never see one in the flesh. But if you’re touring the Autobahn and you see one of these beasts in the rear view, you’ll likely want to move aside.

Barn finds abounded and the Mercedes 300SL world was abuzz after two significant sales.

Scottsdale 2011
Calm weather and some surprising numbers

To the relief of all the auction houses and every consignor, the proceedings at January’s Scottsdale classic car auctions unfolded smoothly with no intervention from Mother Nature. Last year’s torrid storms wreaked havoc on the event with all participants suffering, particularly the Russo and Steele auction house which suffered massive damage to their facilities and hundreds of their client’s cars. This year was smooth sailing with a number of extraordinary automobiles being offered, Mercedes-Benz or otherwise. Barn finds always create a stir and this year’s event presented a long lost , tatty Tucker, a hidden small block Cobra and, perhaps one of the most anticipated offerings, an untouched 7300 mile 300SL roadster. Mercedes-Benz was well represented with cars to accommodate every bidder’s budget from $4,400 to $1,375,000. We present results of most of the Mercedes offered below. All “SOLD” prices include the buyers’ premium which will average roughly 10% of the hammer price and we have eliminated much of the description “fluff” for easier reading.

" width="550" height="224" />
Lot #121: 1970 280SL Horizon Blue w/Midnight Blue two-tone. "This SL boasts a limited ownership record of only three caretakers, each of whom pampered the car and used it sparingly. The roadster is finished with a high quality re-spray in Powder Blue... It also has its convertible soft top and original brightwork. The engine bay of this attractive SL has been detailed... reupholstered blue MB tex seats and matching carpets... black door panels and dash trim that are believed to be original... automatic transmission, air-conditioning, AM/FM radio and bumper guards... toolkit and owner’s manuals.. well-preserved and unharmed example of this modern classic." SOLD for $49,500. Hmm, while the images looked fairly encouraging, the engine bay shot reveals black inner aprons (a definite no-no ) and a fairly messy right front fender edge. After chatting with my spies I'm told the hood/front fenders and nose of this car had been crudely replaced. So, we have another example of a sub-standard Pagoda bringing $50k. And the brochure description certainly did not help things by noting it to be "unharmed" and "an example that has never been restored, it is remarkably preserved." These comments were absolute nonsense. I'll note this sale as overpriced by $20k or 40%. Or, as Keith Martin of SCM says, "well sold." Indeed.

Clearly it was a car for serious enthusiasts, among them Loren Kieve of New Mexico who, in 1967, travelled to the factory in Stuttgart, Germany to take delivery of this special-order car. He specified it just as it presents today, in light gray over a rich, light-olive green leather with an AM/FM Becker Europa radio, optional power windows, single seats, left and right rearview mirrors, a cream fabric top, 4.08:1 limited-slip axle and the highly desirable five-speed ZF manual transmission. The five-speed transmission totally transforms the driving characteristics of these cars. One of only five 300 SE models produced with this option, it is the only one known to have been delivered to the US. It yielded performance comparable to the next-generation V-8 cars, with a top speed of 124 mph and a staggering 0–100 kph (62 mph) in 10.9 seconds. This combination of performance and style in a road-going luxury car of the 1960s is exceptional, and the very rare example presented here is in turn-key condition thanks to a thorough mechanical reconditioning by McCay’s Boston Sportscar Company last summer." SOLD for $112,750. While this is massive money for a 112 Cabriolet - well into decent 3.5 cabriolet territory - it's probably the only 112 cabriolet in the US with a five-speed. It was reported to be presented in lovely order although not fully restored. Presuming the M189 series engine is healthy and leak free and the air suspension behaves properly, I'd consider this cabriolet fairly bought." width="550" height="231" />
Lot #164: 1967 300SE Cabriolet White Grey/Green, 1 of 5 five-speed manual gearbox 300SE's on the planet. "... light gray over a rich, light-olive green leather... A known car within the club, it was remarkably sound when the decision was made to give the car a concours level restoration. In fact, Walter Quitt, who has rebuilt literally dozens of 300 Sc drivelines, had already overhauled the engine and transmission. The body and chrome, as well as the differential and brakes, were restored by the highly respected Rudi & Co. of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The trunk of this handsome Sc is outfitted with dual spare wheels and fitted with 300 Sc Roadster-only luggage that matches its beautiful crimson leather. Ken Nemanic, who has trimmed no fewer than seven Pebble Beach Best of Show-winning entries, upholstered the interior and restored the folding top using the proper plastic rear window with the factory- correct markings. The restoration was completed in late 2008 in time for the Sc to make its debut at the Mercedes-Benz Starfest, held in San Francisco that year. The car was awarded Best in Show at that event and has since competed at the Palo Alto, Hillsborough and Marin-Sonoma concours taking Best in Class honors each time. Given its relatively late build date, this car features the highly desirable pairing of sophisticated disc brakes with the rugged cast-iron engine. Although consistently registered and referred to as a 1964, Mr. Henry’s second Roadster was, in fact, assembled well before the SL he had purchased in Europe two years earlier. Whether or not he was aware of this unusual circumstance remains uncertain. The SL was driven sparingly during its first few years before being retired from use with just over 7,000 miles on the odometer. Evidence of its last use on the road is a Pennsylvania registration sticker that expired on January 31, 1970. In recent months, the respected restoration firm returned this SL to running order without disturbing the impressive originality of the engine bay. Throughout the interior and exterior, this Roadster wears the unmistakable signs of an untouched “time-warp” example." SOLD for $951,500. One of the long hidden C. Jewett Henry SLs. Wisely presented in essentially "as-found" cosmetic condition, this disc brake, cast iron block roadster represents the Holy Grail for any thoughtful 198 series Mercedes-Benz enthusiast. The interest in un-restored "survivors" of any make continues to grow and this roadster is about as good as it will get within the realm of fully documented untouched originals. As such it was rewarded with a staggering end price. I'm told Gooding had to work the room surprising hard to move the bidding out of the $600k range. Mr. Henry's other roadster, an 11k mile ivory/red 1963 sold quietly last year to one of our newsletter subscribers for similar money. Mechanically, the 300SL is factory correct in specification with the exception of upgrades under Mr. Aoki’s ownership, including a four-wheel disc brake conversion in the style of the Mercedes-Benz 600, with dual-caliper units up front. In addition, a stainless-steel fuel tank was installed during his ownership. The car also benefits from a comprehensive and recent mechanical re-commissioning under the current owner by Kevin Kay Restorations. The work included the installation of new Koni shock absorbers and a stainless-steel exhaust system. In addition, the Bosch mechanical fuel-injection system was inspected and tuned. SOLD for $450,000. While RM notes the car sold "Confidential," my sources note the car hammered at $450,000 which would result in RM reporting a "sold" price of $495,000. This is a little stiff for a car fitted with Mercedes 600 brakes (evidently including the 600's two caliper per front disc arrangement). Retrofitting to the correct system will be expensive. Backing the numbers up, we estimate the seller walked away with about $405k. A phone call to me would have put the seller a little ahead of that figure without the aggravation of entry fees, transportation and the auction hoopla. The Auction environment may have worked against this particular Gullwing seller. However, hat same environment can also work for sellers as the example below illustrates... The color and trim combination is more compelling but $22k buys a 2000 or later SL600 in California. This was an expensive SL although in fabulous order.

Have you ever heard of an Argento Vivo? We hadn't until I spied a very suspicious looking pair of unfinished specials sitting on SL73 wheels. A closer look revealed two one-off SL73s commissioned by the Sultan of Brunei.

AMG wheels reveal SL73 underpinnings of this unusual creation.

Unfinished SL73 based Argento Vivos
The Sultan’s Dream R129 SL

It’s amazing what I find at the shipper during my regular trips to redress the United States massive trade imbalance. A recent trip to drop off a lovely 280SL destined for Holland revealed two partially finished oddities awaiting shipment that I immediately recognized as the “Argento” Mercedes I had seen advertised in Hemmings earlier this year (2005).

The Hemmings listing featured an artist’s rendering of the nose of the car with very little information, although the text did mention the car(s) needed “finishing.” I’ll certainly second that! The ad was somewhat cryptic simply referring to the cars as specially constructed one-off Mercedes SL600s. The listing appeared in a few issues of Hemmings and then disappeared.

The World’s Largest Car Collection?

Inspecting the script on the carbon fiber upper engine covers of each car revealed they were commissioned by the Royal Family of Brunei or more specifically, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, and for some reason both projects had been abandoned. Perhaps the Sultan forgot he commissioned the cars! You see, he already owned over 4,000 other cars at the time! He is likely THE most prolific collector of exotic automobiles in the world, with a penchant for commissioning the construction of whatever suits his whimsy. Researching the car buying habits of the Sultan reveals an astounding collection of cars numbering between 4,000 and 5,000! And a high percentage of those cars are one-offs such as Bentley SUVs, Ferrari 456 four door sedans, and Aston Martin station wagons.

Fabrication quality can not be faulted on the Sultan's Vivos. The same can not be said of the design concept.

689 Mercedes!

I counted 189 Mercedes AMG models on a list purporting to be a complete inventory of his cars. And there were over 500 more regular Mercedes-Benz automobiles at his disposal. During the ’90s it has been reported that he purchased half of Roll Royce’s total production! This is all really no surprise in view of two basic facts; he’s a car nut and he earns 3/4 of a billion dollars each year, give or take a few hundred million.

As I looked over the two 1997 Argento Vivos, I was amazed at the extent of the modifications performed on the two ultra rare AMG SL73s. The constructor had removed every piece of proprietary Mercedes sheetmetal and mechanical items above the floor pan of the car. The complete perimeter of the unit body was simply shaved off and thrown away. The factory soft top and hardware were gone, replaced by a hydraulically actuated articulating carbon fiber hard top! God forbid the Sultan should have to peer at a standard Mercedes dash, hence that was ripped out and replaced with a formed carbon fiber unit. Every square inch of this car was specially conceived by its designer to provide the Sultan with yet another absolutely unique car to park in one of his three massive airport hangers, each filled with spectacular cars.

Looking underneath the cars revealed spotless new, never used, drivetrain and suspension, albeit with conventional springs rather than the standard SL600′s self-leveling struts and spheres. Each RHD interior was filled with various pieces; partially completed aluminum panels, exhaust parts, new instrument clusters, and a few original SL600 bits and pieces. The workmanship was absolutely superb with most of the external sheetmetal in specially fabricated aluminum and the nose and tail covers done in carbon fiber.

While one car with its more complete coachwork is further along than the other, both remain daunting projects to complete. These cars are barely 20% finished. Will they be completed? I don’t know as I have not been able to contact the new owners. My feeling is completing the cars will require a budget only the Sultan could stomach and they will likely be stripped of their zero mile SL73 drivetrain and the rest tossed aside. If this is the case, two of the 85 SL73s constructed by AMG will disappear from the planet.

We’ve had over 51,000 different Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts visit MercedesHeritage.com since we went live late last year. What are your fellow enthusiasts driving? Let’s take a quick tour around the world and have a peek at some of YOUR cars.

Four SLs and Four Goodfellas from Ankara, Turkey

Our friend Prof. Volkan Sinci sends these images of a small gathering of SLs in Turkey, four different generations in fact. Dr. Sinci is a professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Gazi University and owns the SL300-24 pictured. He reports there are about 40-50 SLs roaming around ancient Ankara and sent us some images representing about ten percent of those cars!

<img class="size-full wp-image-3324" title="sinci1" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/sinci1.jpg" alt="Four decades of SLs are covered in this image taken during a warm May afternoon in Ankara, Turkey. The later car is as soft and flowing as the earlier is aggressive and and masculine. A great shot.

220SE and 600 from Brussels, Belgium

We met Achim Gier when we sold him the silver 600 pictured below in 2005. He bought the short wheelbase car as a running and driving restoration project and has courageously refurbished all the mechanics including the hydraulics, the suspension, wood and seats. Courageous indeed! Also pictured is Achim’s 1963 220SE coupe which he’s owned for 10 years. He’s a passionate Mercedes enthusiast.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3326" title="gier1" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/gier1.JPG" alt=" "When I was a little boy and people asked me, what would I like to become later, I answered 'King or Pope', because these two were the only people I knew at the time, who had a 600 (the King of Belgium still has at least two and his son married in the Landaulet a few years ago) " Such was the passion for Mercedes-Benz when Achim Gier was a child.
Australia Checks In

Australian Peter Beaufoy sends us these images of his gorgeous and very rare RHD 280SE 3.5 Coupe. Our records indicate only 245 RHD 3.5 coupes constructed and Peter figures 280 were built hence his 3.5 is rare indeed. And beautiful as well resplendent in its 904 blue with whitewall tires.

560SL Touring France

The demand for 560SLs is picking up in Europe and we have sent a few superb examples abroad over the last few years. One of our clients and an avid MercedesHeritage.com reader sends these images of his desert taupe 1988 from Elsass, France, a car we prepared and sold to him.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3358" title="StrassbourgRueBoulanger" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/StrassbourgRueBoulanger1.jpg" alt="While we covet the small bumper 107s here in the States, it seems Europeans are warming to our 560s with the protruding 5mph bumpers.
Seen on the Street in Paris

Our sharp eyed MercedesHeritage reader, Michel Hautekeer from Brussels sends these images taken on a recent trip to Paris. Covering both ends of the spectrum of SLs – a Hamann Volcano SLR and a comparatively petite 230SL, Michel’s images reinforce the notion that you never know what you will find parked among the econoboxes in Europe.

Catastrophic weather dominates the week

Photography from Barrett Jackson, Gooding & Co, RM, Russo Steele, Silver Auctions

Descriptions provided by the respective Auction house.

Historically, the cars and the buyers generate the news during the annual auction mayhem each January in Arizona. 2010, however, proved to be very different with the weather taking center stage for much of the proceedings.

While most auction companies experienced tolerable disruptions as brutal storms rolled across Arizona, Russo and Steele suffered catastrophic losses. The Russo and Steele story is covered elsewhere in our newsletter

Results for the various Mercedes-Benz offered are below and include the buyers’ premium. My comments where applicable are in parentheses.

It was in production through August 1955, with only 997 Cabriolet Bs built. According to a letter sent by a previous owner to the vendor, this lovely example was owned by a gentleman in Wisconsin from 1993 to 1998, who bought it from a party that found the car in a barn they had purchased. Upon acquiring it, he removed the body from the frame and restored both. He claimed to have never driven the car but only restored it cosmetically. In 1998, he sold the car to a car dealer in southern Louisiana, who painted the car black (it was red before) and only drove it 42 kilometers over the next five years. In fact, it sat in his showroom, not for sale, but simply as a display car. Finally, in 2003, the vendor acquired the 220 Cabriolet B with 36,363 kilometers showing on the odometer. Although it was cosmetically restored, he enjoys driving his cars and therefore elected to conduct a mechanical restoration on this car as well. He carried out as much work as possible on his own before sending the car to noted restorer Henry Magno of Massachusetts. Receipts totaling over $37,000 in mechanical work are available. As presented, the car is reported to run perfectly and drives wonderfully. The owner has driven the car about 3,500 kilometers since purchasing it and has won awards in every car show he has entered.
The iconic 107 chassis cars with a distinctly '70s look still capture many buyer's attention, often selling for more than their successor, the 129 series SL500s. What gives?

If you are contemplating the purchase of any SL, be sure to consult the massive ourSL.com Mercedes SL research database. Tips and advise found there can save you thousands of dollars when buying an SL.

One of the most oft asked questions by ourSL.com visitors is whether one should buy a R107 chassis 560SL or a R129 chassis 500SL/SL500 . That’s a very good question due to the fact there is a serious value overlap between good 1986- 1989 560SL s and the 1990 and later 500SL/SL500s. A mint low mileage 1988/ 1989 560SL can sell for about the same as a very nice 1999/2000 SL500. We see this regularly with our own inventory. What gives?

You've got 30 grand to spend and two flawless SLs to choose from. What a dilemma!

Well, we just happen to have in our current inventory a perfect example of this situation, a mint 1988 560SL and a mint 2000 SL500 Sport edition. Interestingly, both have about the same mileage, 55k to 58k, and are priced essentially the same, around $30k. And both are the same color/trim combination, Black(040) exterior with Black(271) leather. There they were sitting side by side in the warehouse just begging to be compared! Let’s grab some information from the ourSL database and have a look at the cold hard facts.

Scanning the data, you get the impression these cars are on different planets from a performance standpoint! Aside from some heaven sent notion that every SL should sit on a 99″ wheelbase, these cars couldn’t be further apart. In today’s power crazed high end European automobile world, the 560SL’s statistics look fairly pathetic. Geez, the thing only makes 227 hp. Your neighbor’s clapped out 1994 E320 wagon makes about the same power. Ok, I’ll admit the V-8 generates 50 more ft/lbs of torque. And 15″ wheels, that’s downright prehistoric! Your 22″ “DUB” wheel-crazed kid would be embarrassed to ride in the thing!

2000 SL500 shorter than 5 mph bumpered 560SL.

Grille star only common nose styling cue between cars.

The differences don’t stop there. While a 560SL owner will fairly wrestle the hardtop off using an array of tools, handles and pawls, our SL500 owner merely extends one well groomed finger to gently press one button to release the hard top, which by the way, weighs 20 odd pounds less than the 560′s. That same well groomed finger will press the red button in the opposite direction to set in motion the silent ballet that is the erection of the newer car’s finely engineered soft top.

Risking a dislocated shoulder, the 560SL owner must cajole, tweak and swear the soft top into its erect position.

Unknown to most of humanity, the 560SL just might owe its very existence to the unforeseen development time needed to perfect the vastly complicated technology for the power hard and soft top mechanisms featured in the 129 models. Remember, a Mercedes model’s usual lifespan had been historically about 8 years. The 107 was constructed from 1971 (very early European 450/350SLs) to 1989, an unprecedented 18+ year model run!

Inside, the 560SL is a model of simplicity with manual seats, fixed steering column, manual passenger outside mirror, fussy seatbelts, and a massive steering wheel. ABS and a single airbag are the only links to today’s safety technology. It really is a step into the past, back to about 1973 actually.

The SL500 is jammed with cool stuff. We see dual airbags, nicely integrated seatbelts (anchored directly to the magnesium seat frames!), tilt and telescoping steering wheel and, get this; power seats! Wow! And there are acronyms galore to keep this SL poised at speed: ADS (adaptive damping control), ASR (Automatic Slip Control) and my favorite, ESP (Electronic Stability Control). I have a few lady friends that would benefit from that last bit of technology.

560SL dash design dates from 1971!

Eyeballing the two cars brings their different characters to the fore. The bulgy fat tired SL500 seems to discreetly tell you, “yeah, I can be a bit of a bully so don’t #*&% with me”. The 560SL, however, oozes an urbane sophistication pretending to be nothing more than its understated styling suggests; a superbly constructed, handsome icon of the ‘80s that is once again becoming a “cool” car to own. Just today, a 20 something year old fellow stopped by the ourSL.com headquarters to ogle the black 560 featured here. He was just a toddler when the 560SL was the big daddy of the European boulevard top down cruisers and now he wants to own one!

SL500 dash layout cleaned up considerably since 1990 US introduction.

To understand the appeal of the 560SL, we must look beyond the bald performance facts and technical gizmos this car lacks when measured against the over-the-top 129 cars. There is the intangible factor of a generational identity with these cars that has raised values and demand. The 560SL was THE automotive statement in the late ‘80s that shouted, “I’ve made it.” Many of the buyers who are paying attention to the 560SL today remember the lust they felt for that car when it was new. Today they have a few extra bucks and will buy a nice example.

I should mention the #1 reason clients give for preferring the 560SL over the vastly superior SL500…chrome! Do you remember that stuff? It was pretty common from about 1929 until 1990 and then, poof, it just about disappeared. Look at the 560 and you’ll see plenty of it. Actually, much of the brightwork is polished stainless steel that gleams just like chrome. People love the face and tail of the 560 because of those jutting rubber encased polished SS bumper structures initiated during the Nixon era and the traditional gleaming grille surround. It’s a look that was burned into their brains during the overlong production period of the 107 series.

While these 107 enthusiasts may not realize it, they also subconsciously appreciate the fabulous build quality of the 560SL . Every item you touch has a robust, finely engineered quality. And the sound of the 560s door closure brings to mind the image of an automobile chiseled form a block of granite. Not so with the SL500 or even a sparkling new SL550. And all the performance gains of the SL500 are largely a moot point. Where can you use that car’s extra power and massive tire grip? You’d have to be damn obnoxious to begin powersliding the 129 around the neighborhood.

Well balanced, crisp (and rather upright) styling of iconic 560SL.

After all my ranting, you’re probably wondering which car I really prefer? Contrary to market trends, I’ll take a Sport edition SL500 over any 560SL. You see, I have to admit to a trace of bully lurking under my placid Yogi-like exterior.

AMG styling/wheel/tire upgrades comprise "Sport" package on SL500.

The 2001 Mercedes SL500 . This was just about the end of the line for the W129 series SL. Introduced in Europe in 1989 and presented to us in the States in 1990 , the car marked a return to power and the methodical correction of all that was perceived wrong with the aging 560 SL (W107) it replaced. With 322 hp, one touch fully automatic retractable soft-top, a slick muscular design with integrated front and rear bumper impact covers and increased overall build quality, the car was an instant hit. Buyers were basically the usual suspects Mercedes had courted for this range since the 230 SL began the move away from a true sporting brief toward the boulevard cruiser of choice: 45-65 year old high income males and well supported wives. Superb build quality and leading edge technology marked Mercedes’ desire to march straight up market distancing themselves from the Japanese who were beginning to make serious inroads into the luxury segment.

And distance themselves Mercedes certainly did, particularly in the price department. In 1990 , the V-8 cars listed for a whopping $85 grand!

But how has this car aged? Out of production since 2002 and replaced with the stunning W230 series car, the last W129 SL500s are inexpensive used cars. Are they fun to drive? Will you feel like a grey haired old fart (like me) tooling around town in one?

We decided to find out by taking our 23k mile Brilliant Silver (744) 2001 example out for a cruise on one of those ‘only in California’ 70 degree crystal clear December days. And of course we set sail for the territory where any SL on the planet is most at home, the California coast, for a blast down Highway One. This is a very demanding job but someone has to take care of these tedious assignments.

Our test vehicle is a Sport model with deepened front and rear bumper covers, sculpted rocker panels and the 18” AMG wheel and tire combination. This package is a must as the standard cars had silly flat face five spoke alloys that look vaguely ‘70 s era hot rod familiar. In today’s automotive world the standard car looks rather bland without the more aggressive body contours and the low profile tire and wheel combination contemporary drivers demand. Without these additions an already mature car looks even more dated. Xenon headlamps and a 6 disc CD changer complete the options on this particular car. As one would expect the list of standard equipment is enormous as it should be with the price new for this car hovering around 90 grand. The heated seats are particularly appreciated by the ladies.

While the car looks vaguely like the original 1990 design, the 2001 looks more harmonious and sleek without the contrasting colored lower side cladding or the parallel symmetry of lower front and side grilles of the first generation cars built through 1995. Overall, the look of the Sport edition is very muscular and masculine due largely to the enormous 245/40 ZR18 front and 275/35 ZR18 rear tires mounted on the “staggered width” AMG wheels.

The fit and finish is just fabulous and in some areas, particularly the interior, various switchgear and surface finishes actually have a nicer feel and look than the next generation SL. Everything you touch reinforces the Mercedes tradition of overbuilt quality. This is why the car weighs so much! Mercedes lists the weight at a whopping 4165 lbs.

The interior layout carries forward the logical, legible, gauge and switchgear layout that anyone who has owned a post 1981 Mercedes will instantly recognize. Your level of comfort in this car is largely a function of how you are proportioned. The inertia reel seat belt system is fully integrated into the beautifully engineered magnesium framed seats. The male portion of the seatbelt is always accessible and vertically adjustable with the power headrest adjustment. It will never end up pinned between the seatback and rear bulkhead as was common in the 1989 and earlier cars. Accommodating all this seat technology dictated a seatback that is just over 6” thick which limits the extent of available travel when you recline the seatback. I like to get my shoulders well back from the steering wheel and I’ve never felt fully comfy in these cars. I’m 5’11” and slightly long-waisted for my height.

I find myself wishing that the engineers in Stuttgart had managed to integrate just 2 inches more overall interior length. When the seatback contacts the rear bulkhead as you recline it, the seat automatically creeps forward to allow more rearward reclining space. And the reverse is true as you extend the fore and aft and the seat back touches the bulkhead. You can cheat this system somewhat with quick clicks of the fore and aft switch and gain a half an inch or so before the seat back automatically rises.

302hp engine fitted with 3 valves per cylinder and 4 cams.

Other cool functions are rear storage compartments that lock when you lock the car – very handy for valuables when you leave the car with the top down – a factory alarm system, CFC free climate control system and windows that automatically drop ½” during door opening to help seal the cabin up tight. And you can program 3 sets of mirror, seat and steering wheel adjustments to accommodate wife, husband, mistress, poolman or any other indiscretion who may use your SL.

The early 500 SLs also had power inside mirror adjustments. So when you loaned your SL to a pal and forgot to tell them this fact, the first thing the new driver did was to reach up and manually adjust the inside mirror. Ooops! A few of those episodes and it was time for a new power inside mirror assembly for a $1000 or so! The 2001 has the manual mirror and everyone is happy. You’ll find a cup holder in the center console, front and side airbags, 6 speaker Bose sound system but no conventional glove box due to the passenger side airbag. The center console has a flip-up/slide forward cover that reveals more storage. The simple failure of the button on the leading edge of this cover that allows the cover to slide forward for better arm support leads to a surprising repair. If the release button falls apart (which they seem to do with regularitiy) the button is not available as a separate item hence you have to buy the complete console from Mercedes which means $1,600 ish plus labor to install the complete center console. OUCH! We learned that lesson the hard way.

Beautiful interior quality highlighted with attractive deep gloss wood.

These late series cars are very satisfying to drive, particularly in view of their bulk. Power is adequate at 302hp and the 5 speed electronic gearbox is fairly well matched to the power characteristics. With a very tall final drive ratio of 2.65.1, 0-60 acceleration is a respectable 6.4 seconds and rolling the throttle to the floor at 40 mph will get your attention with 100 mph coming up with alacrity.

Hard and soft top operation is a breeze with power hard top release and secure functions and a fully automatic soft top. The aluminum hard top now weighs only 70 odd pounds, a full 20 pounds less than the steel top of the 560 SL, and is easily manageable by the man and woman of the house. The 560 SL top was more a job for the man of the house and a women’s discus throwing champion.

All the cars came with a detachable wind deflector that stows upright behind a lightweight cover in the trunk. It attaches to the raised rollover bar via two straps. This greatly reduces interior wind buffeting during top down cruising. If you see a car lacking this deflector, keep in mind Mercedes wants over $700 for a new one! They were standard on every W129 chassis SL.

Automatically adjustable Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlamps a worthwhile option.

ASR or “Automatic Slip Control” is standard on these cars and senses drive-wheel slip and individually brakes the slipping wheel and/or reduces throttle until traction is regained. Should you over extend yourself on a drive in this car; you can rely on the automatic roll bar to come to your rescue if the ASR does not fully solve your predicament. Unless already raised with the button on the dash, the roll bar will deploy itself in one third of a second if both of the following occur: the car inclines more than 26 degrees and a rear wheel extends to its full travel limit (full rebound). If the roll bar automatically deploys you will likely require a new SL and be sore for a few days.

To get a perspective from a more performance driving oriented point of view, we invited ourSL.com test driver, Chris Spencer, to give us his impressions of how this 4100 lb beast feels when pushed a bit. A correct track evaluation was not possible so we headed for some familiar territory that my family has been using for the past 40 years to evaluate everything from 56 Fords to Ferrari 250 GTOs: Crystal Springs road.

“The car has a very high overall level of grip with excellent ‘turn in’ characteristics”, he remarked as the scenery whistled by. “I think you would have to be very aggressive and obnoxious on the street to begin sliding this car. The brake pads are obviously very soft and would quickly disappear with sustained hard driving”. Chris wondered if the transmission would want to down shift and upset the car exiting a corner under hard acceleration and I wondered if the ASR would even allow any degree of power over steer. The answers to those questions will have to wait until we can negotiate a free day at Infinion Raceway in Sonoma.

Here are some things to pay attention to with the late series W129 chassis. We already mentioned the center console and wind deflector replacement costs. Uneven front tire wear on the Sport models brings on an intrusive low speed rumble particularly as you bring the car to a stop. We’ve been forced to change tires with significant tread remaining to eliminate this condition on some cars. With their narrow sidewall and a wide, flat contact patch, the low profile front tires need to be regularly checked for correct pressure and alignment. This should delay the rumbling condition.

You’ll need to get on your knees to inspect the front bumper cover as it rolls underneath the front of the car. The Sport edition cover is lower than the standard car hence is more vulnerable to being ground and squashed on curbs and while negotiating driveways. Replacing a non-repairable front bumper cover can cost $1,600 although most can be repaired. Any 129 series SL is likely to have some front valance damage. It is important to inspect the soft top for functionality and condition. Unlike the 560SL , cloudy or cracked soft rear windows can be replaced without having to remove the complete top from the frame.

The drive train is just about bullet-proof having been built since 1990 with revised ignition and cylinder heads introduced in 1999. As mileage accumulates, subframe mounts and engine mounts will progressively collapse resulting in increasing mechanical resonance transferred through the unit body. Check the seatback forward release handle functions as it is a major operation to change these cables within the seat assembly.

We look for cars that show negligible interior wear and abuse. Due to the fairly low and confined seating position, most of humanity will kick the aptly named kick panels, drag their feet on the fabric covered speakers in the door panels and chafe the seat front edge while exiting the car. Carefully inspect the console wood for fractures as this is another very expensive item to replace. We always try to find a car that has had negligible top down cruising hence one that retains supple seat leather and rich appearing wood absent the cloudy or bleached look due to sun exposure. Oh, I should also mention the doors weigh a ton.

Looking over the MB Net vehicle history on our test car reinforces our perception of reliability. The car has made just one trip to the dealer for its FSS (flexible service system) prompted service. During this service visit which, by the way, is free for ‘ 01 models, we see only an oil level sending switch repair performed over and above the service.

We did send our car to MBZ, however, as we’re aware of failing crankshaft pulleys on many of the 2000 and later V-6 and V-8 cars. If left unchecked the wobbling pulley will slowly machine a nice groove in the front engine cover eventually requiring its replacement, a very expensive repair for a car out of warranty. We check all the pulleys and tensioners on these cars and after checking our SL, requested MBZ to replace most of these items. So there are now a few more entries in this cars warranty data bank.

I do like these SLs. They are well built, have good power and are easy to drive quickly with a minimum of fuss. There are many around and these late series cars are fundamentally reliable, well developed SLs. Soft and hard top functions are as slick as you’ll find, short of the current retractable hard top.
