Completing a clean break from the pre-war designs relied upon for its immediate post-war industrial revival, Mercedes-Benz introduced new, modern 220 series in 1954. Featuring a self-supporting perimeter “ponton” type body structure welded firmly to the frame floor unit, the new car offered a new level of refinement and rigidity.
