Replacing the rather upright 108/109 series, the new 116 chassis further established Mercedes-Benz as the global leader in quick, nimble full size luxury sedans. The ultra-rigid unit body provided the platform for an ideal, stable Autobahn cruiser. US regulations would strangle the cars from 1974 onward. An correctly prepared 350SE or 450SE is an enjoyable touring sedan today.
