This is the original color combination for the car. The car was owned by an enthusiast for the past twenty years. He had the body taken off the frame, put on a rotisserie and taken down to bare metal and sandblasted. The engine was removed and completely rebuilt as well as the transmission. The interior and chrome were also completely redone. Nothing was left untouched and as such the car presents as a very complete and very well done restoration. The owner kept nearly every check and repair order for all the work that was done and all those receipts will come with the car. When we got the car the paint was good, but we wanted to take it to the next level so we had the car completely repainted in its original color of black. The car currently sports Mikuni Carburetors, a welcome performance upgrade that give the car excellent performance. Recently we fully detailed the engine and tuned it. The car is one of the strongest running, best driving 190SLs we have seen. Overall this is an excellent example of a 190sl with a fully documented restoration that is presented in a very attractive and desirable original color combination. Please see our website at www.cooperclassiccars.com for additional inventory and call 212-929-3909 for more info.

There isn't a Mercedes-Benz in sight, youngtimer or otherwise. We can change this in 2011.

Hillsborough Concours Car Corral 2011

With a heritage spanning 56 years, the Hillsborough Concours has become an integral part of the rich classic automobile culture in Northern California. It’s fortunes flagged in the 2000s due to lackluster fields and poor luck with the weather. A change in venue to the glorious Crystal Springs Golf course and a new event date in late August has restored the show to its past glory. With no worries about rain and no children’s games to dilute the professional quality of the proceedings, the show has become a must visit event for enthusiasts, local or otherwise. I’ve been attending for 50 years.

MercedesHeritage.com display

For the 2011 event on August 28th, 2011, we’re trying to assemble a large group of Mercedes-Benz for the ‘club corral’ area. The corral cars are not judged but will will be on display adjacent to the main field of judged cars. The ‘corral’ fee is $50 and this includes concours tickets for two individuals. The corral opens at 7am and cars can be removed after 4:30 pm. It will not be possible to leave prior to 4:30 so you’ll need to plan to be at the show the full day or to return to pick up your car.

We have to gain approval from the Concours organizers for each car within our group so this will be the procedure:

Print and complete the Corral application linked here. (Ignore the possibly incorrect show date.)

Enclose your entry check payable to Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance Foundation

Enclose an image of your car if possible (not essential)

Send your completed application and payment to MercedesHeritage.com. 1291 Whitehorn Way, Burlingame, Ca 94010 before July 31st. Don’t send your applications to the Concours Foundation. We’ll present all applications at one time.

The deadline for applications is July 31, 2011

We will present the entire group of applicants to the organizers for approval. The organizers have final say regarding what cars are accepted.

The show will mail acceptance letters to all approved applicants. We’ll mail entry checks back to those applicants not approved.

We think so and Bob Richer agrees. He fell in love with this Arabian Grey 1966 250S in 2009.

(We continue our Your Cars series with this nice recollection by Mercedes-Benz enthusiast Bob Richer. We hope you enjoy Bob’s tale of discovering the enduring appeal of the 108 sedan.)

Chance discovery

The story starts with an event of our local MB Cub in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, last summer of 2009. While talking with one of the members, he mentioned that a friend of his had a Mercedes for sale. I asked him for the name and number and called the gentleman. He was the original owner of this car and had bought it from a Mercedes Benz dealer in Ottawa on March 28, 1966 (copy of receipt attached). It was for sale; however, he did want to ensure that it went to a good home. When I first met him I drove over in my other car, but when I went to visit him on the next trip, I drove over in my 1985 380 SL, which I keep in very good condition. I wanted him to know that his car was going to a good home and to someone who loves to care for and keep their Benz’ nice and clean.

The clean and crisp 108 design offers excellent visibility, spacious interior accommodation and a massive trunk. Most 250 108 sedans were not fuel injected hence the 250S designation on the tail.

My wife and I went to his home and he opened the garage and we entered the garage and were immediately attracted to the beautiful Arabian Grey colour and condition of the car. Then when I walked to the front of the car and saw that beautiful front grill - I was sold on the car. Then we sat in it and saw what wonderful condition this “old” vehicle was in and how well it had been maintained. It was like it had just come out of the showroom. After some discussion we agreed on the price and I had the car picked up by a flatbed and driven to my mechanic to work on the car and prepare it for driving; given that it had been stored for the last four years.

“The original owner had mentioned to me that Mercedes was just introducing the automatic transmission and he wasn’t confident in it just at that time, so he opted for the manual transmission.”

Back on the road

Of course the usual items had to be checked and worked on: check the fuel tank, and fortunately it was in good condition. The original owner had drained all the fuel from the gas tank before he stored it. All of the oil and fluids were drained and replaced. Spark plugs were replaced, as well as a new distributor cap, ignition rotor and wire set. Brake fluid was bled and replaced and new front and rear calipers were needed. Both steering tie rods and centre drag link were replaced, and a wheel alignment was completed on all four wheels. The dual carburetors were cleaned and adjusted. This took some time to get them just right, but once they were properly adjusted the car ran very well.

Typically Teutonic dash layout is simple and clean with plenty of wood. Radio and tachometer under dash not original items. Visibility is excellent in any 108 sedan.

It was now road worthy and I was able to take it on the road. The four speed manual transmission worked very well and it was a treat to drive this classic vehicle. The original owner had mentioned to me that Mercedes was just introducing the automatic transmission and he wasn’t confident in it just at that time, so he opted for the manual transmission. In retrospect, at the time, he felt it was the right decision to go with the manual transmission. It is fun to drive this car and is difficult not take my eyes off and follow the beautiful shining star on the front hood!

2.5 liter single overhead cam six produced 146 hp SAE on twin (and troublesome) Zenith carbs. Fuel injection added 24 hp.

Once the mechanical work was completed, it was now time to address the engine compartment and interior. I kept track and invested over 60 hours on cleaning and detailing the car, both inside and outside. Fortunately I met another car nut who enjoyed detailing and working on his car as much as I did and he shared some of his techniques and products with me that allowed me to clean and shine the car to close to its original look. Next summer I will work on the exterior and use a rubbing compound, buffing, followed by waxing and buffing it, to really bring the paint up to its original shine and luster

I have also a number of service manuals that the owner included with the sale. He also had two grease guns, that I won’t use, but are nice to have. He was a very hands on owner and used to grease the car himself on a regular basis, as this vehicle has many spots that need to be greased an at least an annual basis. I have it greased when I have the oil changed each year. The original tool kit in the trunk is also in excellent condition.

I have brought my car to various local Benz meets and I have received many compliments on the condition and look of the car. It makes all of the hours invested in working on the car very worthwhile. My wife and I look forward to many years of enjoyable driving and cruising in our beautiful ’66 250S. The only downside is that I have to store it for the winter months and can’t drive it all year round!

Serenely elegant and supremely roomy and practical, the V8 short wheelbase variants provide comfortable, effortless touring. Octane Magazine thinks so too.

Octane Magazine recognizes the V8 SWB 108s

Our friends at UK based Octane magazine are always on the lookout for under appreciated and undervalued classics. March’s issue contains an article by Dave Selby touting the 280SE 3.5 sedan, a car the US received as a 4.5 liter. According to Dave, “it’s one of the most tasteful Mercs” and “has to be one of the most subtle ‘Q-cars’ around.” (The Q-car moniker arose from Britain’s practice during WW2 of operating military ships disguised as passenger and commercial vessels.) Of course the ultimate Mercedes Q-car would be the complicated and finicky 6.3.

advertisement

Looking over the elegant facia of a 4.5 SE, we see lovely wood, power windows, AC and a roomy cabin. Buying an example with a near-perfect interior is a must. Restorations costs mirror that of the same era high value coupes and cabriolets.

The point here is a healthy 280SE 3.5 – or for us in the US the 4.5 – is a quick practical understated sedan. You receive most of the build quality of the sexier coupes/cabriolets for a fraction of the cost. We couldn’t agree with Octane more. Of course, we’ve been devoted 108 promoters for years and have prepared and sold dozens of examples.

Symmetry and balance at its best; the short wheelbase V8 saloons exude presence. $15k buys a superb, low mileage example and $4k buys a hobbling potential parts car. Caution is the key to buying a SWB 4.5.

Dave sums it up noting, “Here’s a car you’d be proud to NOT be recognized in, which is all the better considering it could top 125mph and whisk you to 60mph in under 9 seconds.” If that’s your style, be sure to give the 280SE 4.5s a look when you consider a low cost entry into the collectible Mercedes-Benz world.

La Carrera Panamericana 2010 Open Road motoring at it best What do you get when you unleash 120 race prepared cars from the ’50s and ’60s on 3,200 kilometers of unprotected Mexican highways? That would be the La Carrera Panamericana, a reprise of the treacherous Mexican classic run from 1950-1955. After the noise had stopped and all the wayward cars were retrieved from the ravines and canyons stretching from Chiapas to Zacatecas, the thundering early ’50s Studebaker driven by former world rally star Harri Rovenpera was crowned 2010′s winner. This was no ordinary Studebaker and Rovenpera certainly is no ordinary driver. Rovenpera, considered a gravel specialist during his rally days, won 3 consecutive 2 liter world rally championships (1996-1999). A rallyist’s skills are just what are required for the La Carrera – lightning quick reactions for surprises on the road and steely nerves to keep the throttle down while hurling past spectators, buildings and trees positioned just feet from the road.

Rovenparra sets the "Studie" in a perfect drift on his way to victory in the 2010 La Carrera. His loyal navigator Jouni Narhi kept him up to date on the rapidly unfolding terrain and prevented any "offs." Note the slip angle of the Studebaker in relation to the white lines on the road - a master at work.

The Studebaker was essentially a Nextel Cup stock car fitted with the slippery Raymond Loewy designed original coachwork. Eclectic doesn’t begin to describe the variety of cars entered and local residents witnessed competitors piloting ’50s Buicks, Hudsons and Fords as well as 60′s machinery such as Porsche 911s, Alfas and Volvos.

Mercedes-Benz was well represented and we present a selection of those entered below.

(We reprint this craigslist advertisement for your amusement)

“This Mercedes has no seatbelts in the back, and the ones in the front are of the airliner lap-best variety. There are safer cars out there for sale. Cars with thick slab like steel pillars cocooning you from the outside world. Cars with 7 airbags. Cars with airbags for your knees. They have fancy GPSs that will tell you where you should go; they have systems that will brake for you, before you even notice that the car in front of you is slowing down.”

“This Mercedes has none of those things. This Mercedes barely even has brakes. This Mercedes doesn’t even have a conventionally operational heating system, or a radio. There are no power windows, locks, or mirrors. This car does not have seven airbags.”

No options and "barely even has brakes." Where did the rocker moldings go?

‘Spikes and brutal tread’

“And those other cars, Their horns make cute little beeping noises, so considerate to not be rude. They don’t have horns that sound with the arrogance and fury of some long dead Mongol warlord. They don’t come with apocalyptic snow tires, all spikes and brutal tread. You cannot fix those cars on the side of the road, using a wrench as a hammer. Those cars will never force you to think, never allow you to exercise your own ingenuity. In those cars you can’t stand up illegally through the sunroof from the back seat, and watch the moon with the cool night air blowing through you air.”

‘Some day you will die’

“Richard Nixon once said “Human existence is in the struggle.” You could buy a car that will try and hide you from all the dangers of the world, but it won’t save you; all the alarms, all the air bags, and the low sodium lattes in the world won’t save you. Some day you will die. But at least you can die with the wind in your hair.”

“Alternatively it would make a good parts car.”

Extraordinary 21k mile 6.3 Survivor

If you’re a Mercedes 108/109 series enthusiast, you’ve probably mused over the experience of somehow driving a new 300SEL 6.3. Most of the cars offered today offer handling and refinement characteristics generally removed from what the cars felt like when new, even nicely restored cars. What did a new 6.3 feel and look like?

The Mercedes Museum probably has a superb example but here is a car you can buy today, Luis Pacheco’s mind boggling 1970 6.3. It is literally “in the wrapper” and retains its original fitted luggage. Amazing! Everything seems to be in order: decals, luggage, handbooks, tool roll, perfect original wood and leather.

<img class="size-full wp-image-4822" title="DSC_0033" src="http://www.mercedesheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/DSC_0033.JPG" alt="Restored?
Power and efficiency: Returning to Spa with the ultimate 6.3 and AMG's new S63. The "greening" of AMG.

This is the daunting high speed "Eau Rouge" uphill swerve.

Power and Brawn
Meets Power and Efficiency

Mercedes recently returned with two unique cars to the site of one of AMG’s greatest achievements during its early years, the sinuous high-speed Spa circuit in Belgium. Each finished in an eye popping red; the two S-Class sedans symbolize the Silver Star’s quantum leap in power and efficiency over the last four decades. The more upright model was a familiar warrior from years past – AMG’s muscular 300SEL 6.8.

Hurling the heavy 6.8 liter, 428hp long wheelbase 300SEL over Spa’s original 14km configuration, drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz hauled the red beast to 2nd place in the 1971 epic. No significant issues were reported over the grueling, sometimes wet 24 hour endurance test.

Two #35s circulating Spa. New S63 show car showcases the efficient and frugal delivery of massive power. Original AMG 6.8 delivered a 2nd place in 1971 utilizing brute power, crude aerodynamics and reliability.

The real story here is the September 2010 release of the new AMG Performance 2015 low emissions, fuel efficient bi-turbo V8 engine/7 speed MCT transmission combination. There will be no 2010 race prepared S63s competing at Spa the year although a computer simulated race comparison with the 300SEL would be an interesting exercise.

39 years of engine development reflected in these two powerful S-class Mercedes-Benz. The new base 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 produces 116 additional hp over the 1971 6.8 liter.

Responsible Power
AMG’s New Era

With their “Performance 2015″ program, AMG is taking the initiative toward addressing the “greening” of the high performance segment head on. The new twin-turbo S63 sedan delivers significant improvements on all fronts – power, fuel consumption AND emissions.

“With a provisional NEDC fuel consumption of 10.5 liters per 100 kilometers, the new S 63 AMG is 3.9 liters more economical than the preceding model powered by the naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8 – despite an increase in output by 14 kW (19 hp) resp. 34 kW (46 hp) and in torque by 170 and 270 newton meters. Engine specialists consider this achieved fuel saving of more than 25 percent to be nothing less than a quantum leap. CO2 emissions have likewise been significantly reduced: at 246 grams per kilometer, the figure is 28.5 percent lower than for the previous model. Both performance variants have identical fuel consumption and CO2 figures.”

Spa 24 hours 2010: Which S-Class would triumph? My vote goes to the new S63.

Running the competition 300SEL through the industry’s fuel consumption loop and testing tail pipe emissions would provide some laughs compared to the new car’s testing results. And so they should. Automobile engine management and design has been transformed over the last four decades and is poised once again for another sea change. AMG and Mercedes-Benz are leading the way with their AMG Performance 2015 program.

Arizona 2010
Catastrophic weather dominates the week

Photography from Barrett Jackson, Gooding & Co, RM, Russo Steele, Silver Auctions

Descriptions provided by the respective Auction house.

Historically, the cars and the buyers generate the news during the annual auction mayhem each January in Arizona. 2010, however, proved to be very different with the weather taking center stage for much of the proceedings.

While most auction companies experienced tolerable disruptions as brutal storms rolled across Arizona, Russo and Steele suffered catastrophic losses. The Russo and Steele story is covered elsewhere in our newsletter

Results for the various Mercedes-Benz offered are below and include the buyers’ premium. My comments where applicable are in parentheses.
