Top Italian design firm’s interpretation of a 230SL
The only “fixed head” Pagoda?
Text from Mercedes Classic
The first ”special version ” of the Pagoda SL straightaway lost its pagoda roof and became something of a multicultural design experiment – a successful one in the view of this author. In 1964 the young American styIist Tom Tjaarda, who came to Turin to produce designs for Pininfarina In 1963, was entrusted with a very prestigious project by the Italian coachbuilder to come up with a Pininfarina custom model based on the 230 SL. Pininfarina had taken up the gauntlet just two months after the 230 SL was unveiled in Geneva. In a letter to Karl Wilfert, which the Iatter presented to the Board of Management in May 1963, the world famous coachbuilding firm asked to be allowed to produce its own custom-bodied version of this vehicle. A majority of the Board members consented to this and Tjaarda set to work.
Pininfarina 230SL received black paint and later style alloys (w/offensive black center caps) during Joe Morell ownership.
In his version the SL shed its pagoda and became exclusively a coupe. Although Pininfarina had been thinking of building a limited edition, this model has destined to remain a one-off however. Tjaarda’s creation retained the grille and headIamps of the original, but he raked the grille more sharply, sculpted the wings and made the sides more bulbous and thus wider, while the engine hood became narrower and shorter. The rear was reminiscent of the Tom Tjaarda-designed Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, but without taking away the distinctive personality of the 230 SL. Inside, Tjaarda left the dashboard unchanged, but the interior as a whole bears the stamp of elegant Italian hand craftsmanship.
Notable features of Pininfarina design are fuller, wrap-around bumpers, elongated tapering nose and tall, airy roof "greenhouse." Altogether a pleasing design.
After long wanderings, this unique specimen was eventually bought by its present owned Weston Hook of La Jolla, California. Initially when Pininfarina put it on show at the Turin and Pans Motor Shows in 1964, about thirty potential buyers had attempted to get their hands on it. In the end it has acquired by German press baron Axel Springer who one year later passed it on to his ex-wife Rosemarie. Next the Pininfarina SL went to Monaco, then to Palm Springs, where it was bought by Joe Morell. Morell first painted it black, then later on gave it a makeover in a rather unbecoming shade of red.
Returned to it original wheels and paint color during the Hjeltness restoration, this special SL fairly glows. I see '60s era Ferrari Berlinetta influenced styling cues and interior fitments.
When its present owner Weston Hook bought the gem in 1997, he had a vision: he would strip off the ”camouflage paint” and restore the vehicle to its original 1964 condition. It was left to restorer jerry Hjeltness from Escondido to transform Weston Hook’s dreams into reality. Straightaway the results were honored — by the high-profile jury of the 1997 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance, who awarded Hook’s car first place in the European sports car class. By a stroke of irony or chance, the jury members included not only former Pininfarina designer Tom Tjaarda himself but also Bruno Sacco, at the time still Mercedes-Benz Design Chief.
And at this time finished in a beige metallic. Note delicate, slim grille shell with pronounced forward tilt to center star. Very handsome.

I knew Weston Hook very well and we often met up at Pebble Beach together with his wife. We were very fond to talk together about this car and Weston did a magnificent job restoring the car to its original condition and color.
I would like to get into touch with his widow about the present state of the car. I was asked by a person here in Toprino if it would be possible to buy the car.
Please let me know if it is possible to get a contact number of Mrs. Hook.
Thank you – Tom Tjaarda

I visited the owner of this great car last year during a visit to the USA. No longer owned by Weston hooks widow. It is in CA and the best contact for gaining access to him is through Dave Gallon who is part of the http://www.sl113.org Pagoda group on the net.
