New Starter for your 190SL

The International 190 SL Group Club Store; International 190SL Group, is supplying to the 190 SL community a new starter and starter adapter kit. The starter is a powerful permanent magnet, gear reduction starter with the correct 29mm drive gear. It comes with a pig-tail that adapts the ring connector of the solenoid wire to the spade connector of the new starter. The adapter kit contains the starter spacer and bolts necessary to install any replacement starter.

This replacement starter is intended to replace the Mercedes-Benz SR58X starter with a 25mm drive gear appears to cause abnormal wear to the ring gear. Observing the issue of drive gear diameter and abnormal ring gear wear was observed, a club supported solution was sought. One option would be to utilize the SR58X with the correct sized drive gear; the other was to utilize the gear reduction starter. The latter was chosen because of its newer technology, lighter weight and smaller size. The advantage of the smaller size is that it can be removed and installed from the bottom by just moving the steering idler (three bolts).

The starter is priced at $180, which includes shipping and can be purchased online from the 190 SL Group. The adapter kit contains a spacer designed by Walt Puryear and machined in North Carolina from billet stock. The kit comes with the installation bolts and hardware. The adapter kit is priced at $40, which includes shipping.
